What is a Postpartum Doula?

Picture
Very simply, a postpartum doula is whatever you need her to be to get through the early days and weeks (and sometimes months) of having a newborn, or two! Here's a list of all the various things your doula can help you with:
  • Questions about your newborn: What's normal and what's not?
  • Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding support
  • Baby-wearing education
  • Diapering, bathing, feeding and other newborn care
  • Light housework
  • Snack and meal preparation- Parents need to eat!
  • Prioritizing sleep- Parents need rest!
  • Processing your birth story
  • Care of older siblings
  • Watching the baby while YOU spend time with older siblings
  • Assisting with the care of preemies and multiples

Think of a postpartum doula like your mother-in-law coming over to help, but walking in with absolutely no judgement or unwanted "advice" about raising your baby, and knowing exactly what needs to get done to help you meet your postpartum goals.

Anne's experience includes raising her two sons who were born in 2006 and 2009, assisting mothers with breastfeeding as a La Leche League Leader since 2008, assisting her birth doula clients since 2011 and working as a postpartum doula since September 2015. She also has CPR training and is certified for postpartum doula work through Welcome Baby Care/Modern Doula Education.

Anne's areas of expertise: Laid back breastfeeding, full-term nursing, tandem nursing, twins, baby wearing in wraps and ring slings, cloth diapers, attachment parenting, co-sleeping and bed sharing, and elimination communication.
